Senior Cambodian government official insists that Beijing government continues to support the 180-kilometer-long Phonon Creek project.
Deputy Prime Minister and 1st Vice President of Cambodia Development Council, Mr. Sun Chanthol said on September 16 when he had a discussion with Mr. Wang Yi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China that China continues the Prekjik Phon Techo project, the National Road Improvement Project No. 3 connecting from Kampot-Vaal Ren province and Further marketing expansion through free trade agreements.
He claims that Beijing supports Cambodia in the project of digging Phonon Techo stream, which is 180 km long, connecting Basak river to the sea of Kep province, which will cost about $1700 million for construction.
The Secretary General of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, Mr. Yong Pov, has recently announced that the Phonon Techo Prek project is a new historic project for Cambodia and after the construction is completed, this huge project will leave the infrastructure for centuries to come.
He stated that compensation to affected citizens is a necessary thing that the Cambodian government must take very seriously because there were concerns about the impact in the past, and the practice of compensation for the impact has ever been injured or could. In other words, some of the affected citizens did not receive proper justice.
Prekjik Phon Techo project, which is expected to spend about $1700 million, was held a grand opening ceremony on August 5, 2024 claiming that China is the one who spends the construction. The digging stream is 180 kilometers long, starting from Takeo Creek of Mekong River, passing through Ta Ek Creek of Basak River, then through Tahing Creek of Basak river, Koh Thom district, and continuing up to the sea of Kep province.
This project crosses 4 provinces: Central province, Takeo, Kampot and Kep province, which has a total of 1 million 6 hundred thousand people living along both sides of this waterway.
